Who can apply
['DHR evaluates the family’s financial need and relationship to the children under its Family Assistance rules. Eligibility is not the same as SNAP eligibility.', 'Ask the county office about the current assistance-unit, work/JOBS and child-support cooperation rules that apply to your circumstances. Report a disability or other participation barrier and request accommodation if needed.']What help is available
Family Assistance is the state’s TANF cash-assistance program. The county evaluates the household before approving support; application submission alone does not establish a payment amount.
Documents to prepare
DHR’s checklist includes income and resource records, Social Security numbers for assistance-unit members, proof of relationship to the children and children’s birth certificates. Contact intake staff if you cannot obtain a requested record.
How to get started
- Use OneAlabama to apply online, or obtain the application through DHR’s eligibility page.
- For a paper application, mail or deliver it to the DHR office in your county of residence.
- Keep confirmation or a copy. Provide the verification requested by the county and discuss any accommodation needed to complete the process.
After applying
DHR’s FAQ says the county has up to 30 days to process the application. Contact that office about missing records or status. Read the decision carefully and ask about the required next steps, reporting duties and review options.

Yes. DHR identifies the OneAlabama website and mobile app as Family Assistance application options.
Where should I send a paper application?
To the Department of Human Resources office in the county where your family lives.
What proves my relationship to a child?
