Arkansas TEA (Cash Assistance)

Arkansas Transitional Employment Assistance offers short-term cash and employment support for eligible families with children. DHS County Operations administers TEA and determines eligibility.

Who can apply

['Families need a child under 18 in the home and must meet the income and other TEA requirements. DHS evaluates the assistance unit and relevant exceptions.', 'Time-limit and participation rules apply. Current DHS policy differs from some older 24-month summaries; ask the worker about the current count, deferrals and exceptions for your case.']

What help is available

TEA provides financial assistance and services supporting work, education or training. Supports can include job preparation, transportation and child care. The case plan determines the assistance available.

Documents to prepare

Prepare family and income information, identity, residency and Social Security or applicable immigration records for benefit applicants. Follow the interview notice’s verification list and ask for help with unavailable records.

How to get started

  1. Apply for TEA through Access Arkansas or contact the DHS county office for a paper application.
  2. Complete the signed application and eligibility interview, keeping confirmation.
  3. Discuss the employment plan, care needs and any participation barrier with the assigned worker.

After applying

Read the approval and reporting/participation requirements. Keep appointments and report changes through the instructed method. If moving from TEA into paid work, ask whether a separate Work Pays application is appropriate rather than assuming it continues automatically.

Common questions

Is TEA just a monthly payment?

No. It combines short-term financial assistance with employment-related support services.

Does DHS or the workforce office decide eligibility?

The current DHS TANF page says County Operations administers and determines TEA and Work Pays eligibility.

Can it help with child care?

Child-care support is among the services described by DHS. Ask the worker what fits the plan.

Is the old 24-month rule still reliable?

Current DHS policy changed the general TEA period in March 2024. Have the worker review the current time limit and applicable exceptions.
