California Courts Self-Help (Eviction)

California Courts’ eviction self-help guide explains tenant responses, court forms and the steps in an unlawful-detainer case. It does not provide rent payments.

Who can apply

Tenants facing eviction can use the guide. The required response depends on whether they received a landlord’s notice or a filed court Summons and Complaint, and how court papers were served.

What help is available

The guide explains response forms, filing, serving the landlord and the court process. A court self-help center can help with procedure; legal aid may assess advice or representation.

Documents to prepare

Keep the notice, Summons, Complaint, envelopes, service dates, lease, rent records and related communications. Ask a court self-help center to confirm the response deadline.

How to get started

  1. Open the tenant Answer instructions. Do not use an old five-day deadline from a historical screenshot: current instructions use ten court days for personal service, with different counting for other service methods.

  2. Complete and file the appropriate response and arrange required service. Ask about a fee waiver if you cannot afford filing fees.

After applying

Keep court-stamped copies and watch for hearing information. Contact legal help promptly; starting an online form alone does not file it with the court.
