Connecticut Legal Aid (Statewide Legal Services)

Connecticut legal aid helps eligible residents with civil legal problems. Statewide Legal Services is a starting point for screening and referrals.

Who can apply

Free legal assistance is aimed at people with very low income. The issue, service area and available resources affect whether a program can take a case.

What help is available

Help may include advice or referral to a legal aid office. Separate housing-lawyer intake is available for some eviction and subsidy cases.

Documents to prepare

  • Court papers and the next deadline or hearing date.
  • Household and income information for screening.
  • Relevant leases, benefit decisions, correspondence and payment records.

How to get started

  1. Contact Statewide Legal Services

Call 800-453-3320. The Connecticut Legal Services Get Help page also links to online intake.

  2. Flag housing deadlines

For eviction or threatened loss of a housing subsidy, call 800-559-1565 or review evictionhelpct.org. Eligibility includes service-area conditions.

  3. Complete the screening

Explain the issue and provide records the intake worker requests. Clarify whether a lawyer has agreed to represent you.

After applying

Do not assume an application postpones a hearing. Keep deadlines and ask intake staff what to do while awaiting a decision.
