Who can apply
Applicants must meet the income test, have an eligible citizen or noncitizen household member, and face a heating or cooling emergency. A past-due bill alone does not establish the full crisis criteria.
What help is available
The county publishes assistance up to $600 for a crisis, with total payments limited to $600 per state fiscal year, July–June. Approved payments go to the vendor; the amount depends on what is needed to resolve the crisis.
Documents to prepare
Have the utility bill, past-due or disconnection notice, household income and requested eligibility records ready. Explain the health or safety circumstances and date service may end.
How to get started
Contact Stokes County DSS through its current service directory and request a CIP assessment. Identify any immediate heating or cooling danger.
Complete the energy application and the worker’s income and crisis review. Ask which documents can be provided later if something is missing.
Ask about the decision and vendor payment, then verify the arrangement with the utility. Do not assume intake pauses a disconnection.
After applying
Keep the decision, payment details and bills. If the approved amount does not resolve the problem, discuss the unpaid balance and other assistance promptly.
