General Assistance (Maine)

Maine General Assistance helps people who lack the income or resources to meet basic needs. Applications are handled by the local municipal office.

Who can apply

['Individuals and families may qualify when available income and resources do not cover essential needs.', 'The municipal administrator evaluates the request. Explain the specific expense and any immediate deadline.']

What help is available

Approved help is provided as a voucher paid to a vendor. Eligible needs can include food, housing, fuel, utilities and medical necessities; the administrator determines the allowable assistance.

Documents to prepare

Prepare income and available-resource information, the bill or expense you need help with and records showing what you can pay. Ask the municipal office for its checklist and explain if a document is unavailable.

How to get started

  1. Contact your town or city municipal office and ask for the General Assistance administrator.
  2. Apply in person as directed and explain the expense and urgency.
  3. Provide the requested information and retain a copy of the application and decision.

After applying

Read the decision and ask how an approved voucher reaches the vendor. If you cannot reach the local GA office or have concerns about access, contact the DHHS General Assistance hotline at 800-442-6003. Keep any review instructions given with the decision.
