Hawki (Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa)

Hawki is Iowa’s Children’s Health Insurance Program for eligible children whose family income is above Medicaid limits.

Who can apply

Children must be under 19 and meet CHIP requirements. Current HHS guidance describes working families unable to afford private health or dental insurance and children not enrolled in other coverage.

What help is available

Health and dental coverage are available. Income determines premiums: some families pay nothing, and the listed maximum family monthly premium is $40.

Documents to prepare

Prepare household income and information about the child and existing insurance. Use the application’s evidence checklist.

How to get started

  1. Apply through the Iowa HHS Services Portal, or download the health-coverage application from HHS’s Hawki page.

  2. Respond to eligibility requests. For coverage questions, contact Hawki Member Services at 800-257-8563.

After applying

Read the approval and plan information. If billed, the ClickPay instructions require account, case and invoice numbers. Eligibility ends on the first day of the month after the child turns 19.
