Who can apply
ILS generally serves low-income applicants, with income and asset rules and some project-specific exceptions. It does not handle ordinary criminal defense or juvenile delinquency cases, but certain expungement services are available.
What help is available
Depending on case acceptance, help may include advice or representation. An application is a request for review, not confirmation that an attorney has taken the case.
Documents to prepare
- A summary of the issue and any court or response deadline.
- Notices, court papers, contracts or letters relevant to the issue.
- Household financial information requested during intake.
How to get started
Request intake
Use the ILS application page or call 844-243-8570. The page lists telephone intake Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Explain deadlines
State any hearing, eviction or response date at the start.
Confirm the next step
Ask whether your request has been accepted and what records or appointment are needed.
After applying
Keep appointments and monitor court notices while intake is pending. Ask the provider about another service if it cannot take the case.

Common questions
What if I am unsure about the income rules?
Apply. ILS says some projects have different eligibility guidelines.
Is the general office number the intake line?
The application page directs telephone applicants to 844-243-8570.
Will an online legal answer include court representation?
IN Free Legal Answers provides answers to questions; it does not provide full-case representation through that service.
Does applying cancel a court deadline?
Do not assume so. Explain the deadline to intake staff and continue following court instructions.
