Indiana TANF (Cash Assistance)

Indiana TANF provides cash assistance and supportive services for eligible families with children. The Division of Family Resources handles applications.

Who can apply

The program serves qualifying children younger than 18 living with a parent or relative caregiver. DFR applies financial and nonfinancial rules, including income, resources and residency. Check the current state tables rather than assuming the maximum payment is your award.

What help is available

Cash assistance helps meet family needs. The amount depends on countable income and assistance-group size. Some adults also participate in IMPACT employment services.

Documents to prepare

  • Child and caregiver information, including relationship and household members.
  • Income and resource records.
  • Residence and identification information requested by DFR.
  • Any notices or records relevant to employment and child support requirements.

How to get started

  1. Submit your application

Apply through the FSSA Benefits Portal or at a local DFR office.

  2. Complete the review

Give accurate household information and return requested verification.

  3. Follow your IMPACT instructions

If DFR determines participation is mandatory, complete the orientation and assigned applicant job-search activities.

After applying

Read the decision and reporting instructions. The state requires changes in circumstances to be reported within ten days. An unfavorable case action can be appealed using DFR’s written-request process.

The state includes qualifying children living with relatives such as grandparents, aunts or uncles.

Does every adult have the same job-search obligation?

DFR determines whether IMPACT participation is mandatory and assesses exemptions.

Is the amount in the payment table guaranteed?

No. DFR calculates assistance using the household’s countable income.

Can I apply without a computer?

Yes. Use a local DFR office.
