Who can apply
Eligibility depends on income and the legal issue. The provider also describes pathways for older adults, veterans and people experiencing domestic abuse. Apply rather than assuming one income cutoff decides every case.
What help is available
Help may involve housing, benefits, family safety or another civil issue. Screening does not guarantee a lawyer will take the case.
Documents to prepare
Prepare court papers, notices, case numbers, relevant dates and household financial information. Keep original documents and provide copies when asked.
How to get started
Use the online application linked on Iowa Legal Aid’s Get Help page. If a deadline or hearing is within a week, call and state that urgency.
Under 60: call 800-532-1503, weekdays 9–11 a.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m., except Thursday afternoon. Ages 60+: call 800-992-8161; see the separate senior intake schedule.
After applying
Follow intake requests promptly. Confirm what help is offered and who is responsible for court filings; contacting the office does not postpone a deadline.
