Kansas Earned Income Tax Credit

Kansas’s earned income tax credit is claimed on the state income-tax return and is based on the federal EITC.

Who can apply

The 2025 Kansas instructions limit this credit to residents, excluding part-year residents and nonresidents. Federal EITC eligibility and the federal amount are needed first.

What help is available

For tax year 2025, Kansas calculates the credit at 17% of federal EITC. Follow the K-40 worksheet to apply the credit and its refundable portion.

Documents to prepare

Keep the federal EITC calculation, wage records and completed K-40 worksheet. Store dependent and residency evidence with your return.

How to get started

  1. Use the tax booklet matching the year of the return. Calculate the federal credit before completing Kansas’s EITC worksheet.

  2. Enter the state credit and refundable amount as instructed on K-40. If the IRS has not yet calculated your federal EITC, the Kansas booklet explains filing without the credit and later amending.

After applying

Keep copies of both returns. Respond to Revenue notices using the address or secure process in the notice.
