Kentucky Legal Aid (Civil Legal Help)

Kentucky’s four regional legal aid organizations provide free civil legal assistance. Your county and legal problem determine which organization should review your request.

Who can apply

['Services focus on low-income and other vulnerable residents with civil legal problems. Intake also reviews the issue, conflicts and available resources.', 'Kentucky Justice Online says its income eligibility screening does not apply in the usual way to people over 59 or experiencing domestic violence. Contact a provider for an individual assessment.']

What help is available

Help may include advice or representation for accepted housing, family, benefits and other civil matters. Online information is available, but reading it does not establish an attorney-client relationship.

Documents to prepare

Prepare court papers, deadlines and a short timeline. Keep income information and the names of everyone involved available for intake. For a safety concern, explain a safe way and time to contact you.

How to get started

  1. Use the regional contact map to identify your legal aid organization.
  2. Contact Kentucky Legal Aid at 800-782-1924, Legal Aid Society at 502-584-1254, Legal Aid of the Bluegrass at 859-431-8200, or AppalReD at 866-277-5733, according to your region.
  3. Tell intake about any court deadline immediately and follow the provider’s application instructions.

After applying

Confirm whether the organization has accepted the case and what help it will provide. Keep attending court and meeting deadlines unless an attorney tells you otherwise. If the provider cannot take the matter, ask about a referral or relevant self-help material.

Which organization should I contact?

Use the regional map and your county. The four programs cover different parts of Kentucky.
