Kentucky Medicaid & KCHIP

Kentucky Medicaid and KCHIP provide health coverage through eligibility pathways for children, families and other qualifying residents. DCBS handles applications, including those submitted through kynect.

Who can apply

['Eligibility varies by age, income, pregnancy, disability and other circumstances. Children may qualify for KCHIP even when an adult in the household does not qualify.', 'KCHIP provides free coverage for eligible uninsured children younger than 19; Kentucky also describes eligible pregnancy and postpartum coverage on its KCHIP site.']

What help is available

Approved coverage helps pay for health services under the applicable program. Check the assigned plan and participating providers before arranging nonemergency care.

Documents to prepare

Prepare household members’ information and income records, including wages, self-employment and benefits. Resource questions can apply to some eligibility categories. Explain the coverage you need rather than assuming every Medicaid category uses the same financial rules.

How to get started

  1. Apply at kynect, with a kynector, by calling 855-306-8959, or at a DCBS office.
  2. Complete household and financial questions and submit requested verification.
  3. Read the decision for each applicant and follow instructions for coverage and plan enrollment.

After applying

Keep contact details current and respond to renewal requests. Kentucky’s 2026 notices discuss future community-engagement changes; the member page currently says no action is needed for that notice. Follow the instructions and effective dates in your own case rather than applying future rules early.

Common questions

Can I apply for just my child?

Yes. Provide the household information requested so DCBS can evaluate the child’s coverage.

Can someone help me apply online?

A kynector can assist, and DCBS offers telephone and office applications.

Are all Medicaid applicants subject to an asset limit?

Financial rules depend on the eligibility category. Answer the application questions and ask DCBS which rules apply.

Do the 2026 community-engagement notices require immediate action?

The current member notice says no action is needed at this time. Read later notices for any effective date and individual requirements.
