LIEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program)

West Virginia LIEAP helps eligible households with heating costs during announced application periods. The published regular February and emergency June 2026 windows have ended; ask DoHS about the next opening.

Who can apply

['Households responsible for home heating costs whose income and other circumstances meet the announced program rules.', 'Emergency assistance has additional energy-crisis requirements and its own application period.']

What help is available

Approved assistance toward home energy expenses. Program openings depend on the announced dates and funding; an accessible portal does not establish that applications are currently open.

Documents to prepare

Prepare income and household information and a heating account or supplier record. For emergency screening, keep shutoff or past-due notices and any receipt showing how earlier LIEAP assistance was used.

How to get started

  1. Contact the county DoHS office or check current agency notices for an open period.
  2. During regular intake, use WV PATH or the application from the county office or participating agency.
  3. For emergency intake, follow that announcement’s instructions; the June 2026 notice required applying in person.
  4. Explain an immediate loss of heat and ask about other available resources.

After applying

Keep proof of filing and any energy payment receipts. Continue discussing payment arrangements with the supplier. Ask the office whether a new period is announced rather than assuming last winter’s dates repeat.

Common questions

Is the February 2026 window still open?

No; the announcement listed February 2–20, 2026, or earlier funding exhaustion.

Was emergency June intake separate?

Yes, the June 8–26, 2026 announcement had separate crisis and in-person requirements.

Can I assume a 2027 opening date?

No; check a current announcement or the county office.

Does applying stop a utility shutoff?

Ask the utility about your account and contact the county office urgently.

Why keep heating payment receipts?

The emergency announcement required proof that a prior direct LIEAP payment was used for heating.
