Who can apply
['Households must meet Alabama’s LIHEAP income rules. ADECA’s overview lists a ceiling of 150% of the federal poverty level; ask the county agency for the current household-size table.', 'The program targets households with particularly high energy needs, including older people, people with disabilities and young children.']What help is available
LIHEAP supports home-energy costs. Funding and available types of help depend on the local agency; ask separately about a shutoff or loss of heating or cooling.
Documents to prepare
Before making an appointment, ask the local agency which proof it accepts. Useful records to gather include a current energy bill, household income records and any disconnection notice. Do not assume this preparation list replaces the agency’s checklist.
How to get started
- Open ADECA’s county agency map and find the organization serving your county.
- Use that agency’s appointment or application instructions. ADECA does not book appointments or process household applications.
- Submit the requested records. If energy is about to be disconnected, tell intake staff the date and ask whether crisis assistance is available.
After applying
Follow up with the county agency for application status, missing records or a complaint. Keep the account active and communicate with the utility while assistance is pending; a request alone is not a promise to prevent disconnection.

Common questions
Where do I apply?
At the community action agency serving your county. Use ADECA’s map to locate it.
Can ADECA check my application?
ADECA directs status requests to the county agency handling the application.
Does the program help with cooling?
Its purpose includes both home heating and cooling costs. Ask the local agency what help is currently available.
What if I have a shutoff notice?
Mention the deadline when requesting intake. Keep the notice and contact the utility about payment options while the agency reviews the request.
