Louisiana Earned Income Tax Credit

Louisiana’s earned income credit is claimed on a state income tax return. For the 2025 return currently supported by published instructions, the refundable credit equals five percent of the federal earned income credit.

Who can apply

['The 2025 Louisiana instructions link eligibility to the federal earned income credit claimed for that year.', 'Use the form and rules for the tax year being filed. Do not use a proposed bill or an old worksheet as proof that another tax year follows the same rules.']

What help is available

A refundable credit can reduce tax and contribute to a refund. The actual state amount follows the federal credit and the Louisiana worksheet; it is not a separate assistance application.

Documents to prepare

Prepare the completed federal return, earned-income records and information supporting any qualifying children. Keep your federal credit calculation and use the Louisiana earned income credit worksheet for the same year.

How to get started

  1. Determine the federal earned income credit using the applicable IRS return instructions or qualified tax help.
  2. For a 2025 Louisiana resident return, complete the Louisiana earned income credit worksheet and enter the credit on Form IT-540, line 16.
  3. Attach the worksheet as instructed and file through the method listed by the Department of Revenue.

After applying

Save both returns, the worksheet and filing confirmation. Respond to any verification request. For an omitted credit or prior year, ask about an amended return using that year’s instructions. Check new instructions before filing a 2026 return.
