Louisiana FITAP (Cash Assistance)

Louisiana FITAP provides cash assistance for eligible children living with a qualified relative. The Department of Health reviews family eligibility and any related work-program obligations.

Who can apply

['The child must live with a qualifying relative in Louisiana and meet age and financial rules. Eligible children are generally under 18, or 18 and in qualifying full-time secondary education.', 'Citizenship or qualified immigration rules, Social Security number requirements and family income conditions apply. Work-eligible adults may have STEP obligations unless exempt.']

What help is available

An approved family receives assistance calculated from its eligible members and countable income. STEP can provide employment, training and supportive services under the family’s requirements.

Documents to prepare

Gather proof of the child’s relationship and residence, identities, income and school attendance where relevant. Ask about child immunization records and any additional checklist items. Keep documents readable when uploading them.

How to get started

  1. Use the CAFÉ link on LDH’s FITAP page, call 888-524-3578, or request the combined paper assistance application.
  2. Complete the interview and submit verification through the instructed channel.
  3. Discuss STEP requirements and any reason you may qualify for an exemption.

After applying

Read the award notice and any work-plan instructions. Ask the worker how previous TANF months affect your remaining eligibility; Louisiana applies both a recent-month limit and a lifetime limit. Report changes and keep copies of notices and submitted documents.
