Louisiana Legal Aid (LouisianaLawHelp / SLLS / Acadiana)

Louisiana civil legal aid is provided by regional organizations, including Southeast Louisiana Legal Services and Acadiana Legal Service Corporation. Start with the provider serving your parish.

Who can apply

['Providers review financial eligibility, the civil legal issue, service area, conflicts and available resources.', 'Criminal defense and personal injury claims are outside the general services described by these providers. Ask about an appropriate referral if your matter falls outside their scope.']

What help is available

Accepted matters can receive advice or representation. Providers address issues such as housing, family safety, public benefits and debt, depending on the case and their capacity.

Documents to prepare

Collect notices, court papers and deadlines, along with a short timeline and names of the parties. Prepare income information for screening. Tell intake how to contact you safely if the matter involves abuse.

How to get started

  1. For southeast Louisiana, use SLLS Get Help and follow Apply Now to its intake contacts.
  2. For Acadiana’s service area, use ALSC Get Help to apply online or call 866-275-2572 during posted intake hours.
  3. Give intake your parish and deadline. Complete the eligibility review and any follow-up appointment.

After applying

Confirm whether the provider accepted your matter and the scope of help. Submitting an application does not mean a lawyer has agreed to represent you. Keep meeting court deadlines while waiting and ask about referrals or self-help resources if the case is declined.

Common questions

Does applying create representation?

No. Wait for the provider to confirm acceptance and explain the help it will provide.

Can ALSC applications be started online?

Yes. Its online application is available at any time, with a later intake appointment as needed.

What if I have a benefits termination?

Civil legal aid can review benefits matters, subject to eligibility and capacity. Give intake the notice and appeal deadline.

How do I choose a provider?

Identify your parish and check the provider’s service area. SLLS serves southeast Louisiana; ALSC serves its listed parishes elsewhere in the state.
