Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) — Stokes County DSS

Stokes County LIEAP provides seasonal heating assistance paid to the energy provider. Check the application window and current household eligibility with DSS.

Who can apply

Households must meet income, resource and citizenship conditions and be responsible for heating expenses. December priority covers households with a member aged 60 or older, or a disabled person receiving qualifying Division of Aging and Adult Services support.

What help is available

Eligible households receive a one-time heating payment to the vendor, which can include electricity, gas, oil or wood providers. LIEAP is separate from emergency CIP assistance.

Documents to prepare

Prepare the heating account and vendor details, household income and resources, and evidence requested for household eligibility or December priority. Ask DSS for the case-specific checklist.

How to get started

  1. Check the seasonal window with Stokes DSS. The county describes December priority intake and general intake from January, subject to funds, ending by March 31.

  2. Request the current energy application. The county lists DSS at 1010 Main Street, Danbury; confirm intake arrangements before travelling.

  3. Submit the application and requested proof. The county says households must apply and there are no automatic approvals.

After applying

Check the decision and vendor account for the approved credit. If an emergency cannot wait for seasonal intake, ask DSS about CIP and explain the urgent circumstances.

Common questions

Does LIEAP pay me directly?

No. Approved payments go to the heating provider.

Can everyone apply in December?

No. December has priority criteria involving an older household member or a disabled person receiving qualifying aging-services support.

Will last year’s approval carry over?

The county says there are no automatic approvals; check the new-season application instructions.

What if heating is already at risk?

Ask DSS about the separate Crisis Intervention Program rather than waiting for LIEAP’s seasonal window.
