Maryland Earned Income Tax Credit

Maryland’s earned income tax credit is claimed through a state income tax return. Check the state calculation even if a federal credit was already claimed.

Who can apply

['Earned income, residency, filing status and family circumstances affect eligibility.', 'Maryland has pathways for otherwise eligible ITIN filers and some younger childless adults who cannot claim the federal credit. Use the state’s year-specific instructions.']

What help is available

An eligible credit can reduce tax or increase a refund. The screening tool estimates possible eligibility rather than awarding a guaranteed amount.

Documents to prepare

Prepare the federal return, earned-income records, taxpayer identifiers and any qualifying-child information. Use the Maryland tax booklet for the year being filed and retain the state credit calculation.

How to get started

  1. Use the Comptroller’s Earned It page for the screening tool and tax-preparation assistance.
  2. Complete the Maryland earned income credit section using the applicable state return instructions.
  3. Check that the credit is included before filing, even when tax software or a preparer completes the return.

After applying

Save both returns and filing confirmation. Respond to requests for proof rather than treating an estimate as final approval. For a missed prior-year credit, ask about the correct amended-return procedure for that year.

Common questions

Does claiming the federal credit automatically file the state claim?

No. You still must file the Maryland return and claim the state credit.

Can an ITIN filer qualify?

Maryland allows an eligibility pathway for otherwise qualifying ITIN filers. Apply the state instructions.

Is the screener result a payment promise?

No. The actual return and full tax circumstances determine eligibility and amount.

Where can I find free tax help?

The Earned It page links to free or low-cost preparation services, including qualifying VITA assistance.
