Massachusetts TAFDC (Cash Assistance)

TAFDC provides Massachusetts cash assistance to eligible pregnant people, parents and relative caregivers. DTA also connects participating families with education, employment and child care support.

Who can apply

['Massachusetts residents with a dependent child, pregnant at any stage, or caring for a related child.', 'Family income and eligible citizenship or immigration status are assessed by DTA.', 'A relative caregiver may seek a child-only grant; the caregiver’s income is not counted for that application, although the child’s income may matter.']

What help is available

Two cash payments each month, with access to related supports. Ask the case manager about the services available for your family and any participation requirement.

Documents to prepare

Prepare household identity, income and child or pregnancy information. DTA sends a verification list after the interview; tell the worker if a record is difficult to obtain.

How to get started

  1. Select Apply TAFDC on DTA Connect, or call your local DTA office to apply by phone.
  2. Complete the interview and discuss a child-only application if relevant.
  3. Send requested verification through DTA Connect or an accepted office, mail or fax route.

After applying

Review the decision and case notices in DTA Connect. DTA says applications are decided within 30 days. Most families have six-month reevaluations, with some twelve-month cases. Ask whether time limits apply and discuss any extension before the limit is reached.
