Medi-Cal (California Medicaid)

Medi-Cal provides California Medicaid coverage. Apply through the county, BenefitsCal or Covered California, and check the current rules for your eligibility category.

Who can apply

Eligibility varies by income, household, age, pregnancy, disability and other circumstances. California’s 2026 changes affect some adult applicants and members based on immigration status; do not rely on older claims that every adult can newly enroll in full coverage.

What help is available

The eligibility notice identifies covered services and coverage type. Some 2026 adult immigration-status changes affect enrollment or dental coverage while other groups and exceptions have separate rules.

Documents to prepare

Prepare household and income information and any requested identity, insurance or immigration evidence. Ask the county what alternatives it accepts if a record is missing.

How to get started

  1. Apply year-round at BenefitsCal or Covered California, or request phone, mail or in-person assistance from your county.

  2. Respond to county verification requests. If affected by an immigration-status rule, ask specifically about existing-member protection, pregnancy, postpartum, youth or restricted-scope pathways.

After applying

Read the coverage decision, plan information and annual renewal notices. From October 2026, some federally funded eligibility categories change; DHCS describes temporary state-funded continuation for affected members through June 30, 2027. Follow the dated notice for your case.

Your county Medi-Cal office; the notice identifies how to follow up or appeal.
