TAFI (Temporary Assistance for Families in Idaho)

Temporary Assistance for Families in Idaho provides qualifying families with cash support. DHW also describes a caretaker-relative grant and possible one-time diversion assistance for particular circumstances.

Who can apply

DHW reviews income, resources, identity and status requirements. Ordinary family assistance and a caretaker-relative grant have different assessments; the relative grant may depend on the child’s finances rather than the adult’s.

What help is available

TAFI is cash assistance for essentials. Eligible families may use direct deposit or an EBT-style card. Employment and training or child-support cooperation may be part of the case.

Documents to prepare

  • Identification and household income records.
  • Available status and resource information requested by DHW.
  • For a caretaker grant, records showing the relationship and the child’s circumstances.

How to get started

  1. Start a TAFI application

Use the options on DHW’s TAFI application page. It lists phone intake at 877-456-1233 and downloaded forms submitted by mail, email or fax.

  2. Explain the type of assistance needed

State whether you are applying as a family, caring for a relative’s child or facing a circumstance that may fit diversion assistance.

  3. Complete the review

Provide requested evidence and discuss any employment, training or child-support participation instructions.

After applying

Read the eligibility and participation notices. Ask DHW to explain how changes in income, household members or caregiving should be reported.
