TANF Cash Assistance

Georgia TANF combines qualifying-family cash assistance with an employment-services component. DFCS assesses the family and any participation requirements.

Who can apply

The state describes TANF for eligible low-income families with children under 18, children aged 18 attending school full time, and pregnant applicants. Child-support cooperation is required unless good cause is established. Other eligibility rules also apply.

What help is available

Approved families receive monthly cash assistance. The case may include employment-related activities and support; follow the instructions for your own circumstances.

Documents to prepare

  • Prepare household income and financial information.
  • Have children’s relationship, age and school information available.
  • Keep records relevant to pregnancy, caregiving or a requested participation exception.

How to get started

  1. Start with DFCS

Use Georgia Gateway for TANF or obtain the paper application linked on the TANF page.

  2. Submit to the appropriate office

For a paper application, follow the local DFCS submission instructions. Keep a copy and submission record.

  3. Complete the review

Respond to requests about eligibility, child support and employment activities. Raise any concern about cooperation or participation with the caseworker.

After applying

Check Gateway for status and notices. Read the decision alongside any employment-services instructions and reporting requirements.
