Temporary Family Assistance / TFA (Cash Assistance)

Temporary Family Assistance provides cash help to eligible Connecticut families with children and some pregnant applicants. DSS reviews the family’s financial circumstances.

Who can apply

Children generally must be under 18, or under 19 while attending qualifying school, and live with a related adult or an adult applying for guardianship. Connecticut residency, income and asset rules apply.

What help is available

TFA supplies cash support. Employable adults generally participate in Jobs First Employment Services; exemptions, time limits and extensions depend on circumstances.

Documents to prepare

  • Household identity, address and child or pregnancy information.
  • Income and asset records requested by DSS.
  • School, guardianship or disability information relevant to the case.

How to get started

  1. Apply through DSS

Use ConneCT under Apply for Benefits, or follow the paper and in-person options on DSS’s application page.

  2. Complete the financial review

Provide records and explain the children’s living arrangement and any circumstances affecting work participation.

  3. Ask about Jobs First requirements

If approved, confirm employment-service appointments, any exemption and the time-limit rules that apply to your household.

After applying

Keep the decision and report changes as instructed. Ask DSS about extension eligibility before benefits reach a time limit.

No. TFA is family cash assistance; unemployment insurance uses a worker’s employment history.

Can a relative caregiver apply?

The program covers qualifying children living with related adults or adults applying for guardianship.

Do all households have the same time limit?

No. Employability and exemption or extension rules affect the limit.

Where is the online application?

ConneCT, under Apply for Benefits.
