Unemployment Benefits (Ohio)

Ohio unemployment compensation provides temporary payments to eligible workers after qualifying unemployment. The state decides monetary and weekly eligibility separately.

Who can apply

Work and wage history, separation circumstances and weekly eligibility affect the claim. Generally you must be able, available and seeking suitable work unless an exception applies.

What help is available

Approved weekly payments replace part of lost earnings. Filing an initial claim alone does not establish entitlement for every later week.

Documents to prepare

  • Identity and contact information.
  • Recent employer details, work dates and wage records.
  • The reason employment ended and any requested supporting evidence.

How to get started

  1. Open the claim

Use Ohio claimant self-service with an OHID, or call 877-644-6562.

  2. Complete verification

Certify the application and follow identity-verification instructions.

  3. File weekly requests

Answer the weekly questions accurately, including earnings and work-search information.

After applying

Read every determination and request for information. Keep filing eligible weeks as instructed while a decision is pending; follow any appeal notice if you disagree.
