Unemployment Compensation (Alabama)

Alabama Unemployment Compensation provides temporary support to workers who meet the state’s claim and weekly eligibility rules. Filing the initial claim and certifying each week are separate steps.

Who can apply

['The state reviews your work and wage history and the circumstances of the job separation. An initial application is not an automatic approval.', 'For eligible weeks, you generally must be able and available for suitable full-time work. Unless exempt, you must register with the Alabama Career Center and follow work-search requirements.']

What help is available

Approved claims provide unemployment payments for eligible certified weeks. The state determines the amount and payable period from the claim; do not use an older online estimate as a payment promise.

Documents to prepare

Prepare employer names, dates worked, separation details and wage information. Keep identity-verification instructions and the weekly work-search record supplied during filing. Have a secure way to retain your claim confirmation.

How to get started

  1. Open the Alabama Department of Workforce unemployment page and follow its Unemployment Claims link to file.
  2. Provide accurate employment and separation information. Follow any identity or additional-document instructions.
  3. File weekly certifications through the state’s claim system. Report work and gross earnings for the week earned, even if payment arrives later.
  4. Complete required work-search contacts. The state notice requires three contacts per week unless you have been instructed that the requirement does not apply.

After applying

Read wage and eligibility determinations, respond to requests and keep filing weekly certifications as instructed while a claim is pending. Report part-time or temporary earnings accurately. Use the appeal instructions and deadline on any determination you dispute.

Common questions

Does my first application cover future weeks?

No. Continue filing the weekly certifications required by the state.

When do I report wages?

Report gross earnings for the week you performed the work, rather than waiting for payday.

Must I look for work?

The state requires three weekly work-search contacts unless it has instructed you that you are exempt. Follow your claim’s instructions.

Can availability affect payment?

Yes. Report anything that limits your ability to accept suitable work, such as illness or a scheduling restriction. The state evaluates weekly eligibility.
