Unemployment Insurance (Kentucky)

Kentucky Unemployment Insurance provides temporary benefits to qualifying workers. Filing the initial claim, verifying identity and requesting ongoing benefits are separate steps.

Who can apply

['The state checks sufficient prior wages and whether you are unemployed or working less than full time through no fault of your own.', 'For payable weeks you must be able and available for work and meet work-search requirements unless the state recognizes an exemption.']

What help is available

The state determines the weekly payment and allowable period from your claim. Kentucky has an unpaid waiting week; follow the claim instructions so it is properly recorded.

Documents to prepare

Prepare identity details and employer names, addresses, dates and separation reasons for the last 18 months. Federal employees and former military members may need additional records. Keep work-search evidence as you complete it.

How to get started

  1. Use KCC’s File a Claim link rather than an employer login.
  2. Complete the claim and required ID.me identity verification.
  3. Request benefits on the schedule shown in your account and report work and earnings accurately.
  4. Unless exempt, complete five verifiable weekly work-search activities, including three employment applications or interviews, and retain evidence.

After applying

Read monetary and eligibility determinations separately. Continue benefit requests as instructed while issues are reviewed. Keep confirmations, correspondence and work-search records. If you disagree with a determination, use the appeal instructions and deadline on that notice.

Common questions

Is a wage determination an approval for every week?

No. Separation and weekly eligibility conditions can still affect payment.

Is identity verification required?

Kentucky says every unemployment claimant must pass ID.me verification. Use the state’s instructions for help.

How many weekly work-search activities are required?

Unless exempt, five verifiable activities, including three job applications or interviews. Keep supporting records.

Can everyone request benefits by telephone?

The state limits telephone benefit requests to claimants exempt from work search. Follow the online request instructions unless the state says that option applies to you.
