Unemployment Insurance (New Jersey)

New Jersey unemployment begins with an initial claim and requires separate weekly certification. Use the state’s current application instructions and check both email and postal notices.

Who can apply

The Division of Unemployment Insurance assesses wage history, separation circumstances and continuing eligibility. Report reduced work, other payments and any issue affecting availability accurately.

What help is available

Approved benefits provide temporary income. The claim decision establishes entitlement, while weekly answers determine whether a particular week can be paid.

Documents to prepare

  • Identity and Social Security details.
  • Employer contacts, dates and separation information.
  • Weekly gross earnings and hours.
  • Work-search records and agency notices.

How to get started

  1. Prepare and create the account

Follow the state’s online claim instructions.

  2. Submit the initial claim

Save its confirmation and complete any verification or e-Adjudication request.

  3. Certify weekly

Use the current certification schedule and answer the questions for the correct week. Report work and gross earnings, even if payment is later.

After applying

Read mailed and emailed determinations. Ask whether to reopen an existing claim after a work interruption; do not automatically submit a duplicate new claim.
