Weatherization Assistance Program (Maine)

Maine weatherization provides approved home efficiency improvements at no cost to eligible households. Local community action agencies arrange the assessment and work.

Who can apply

['Eligible homeowners, renters and certain two-to-four-unit residential properties can qualify. Renters need the owner’s approval.', 'HEAP participation can establish a pathway, but some households qualify under weatherization rules alone. The agency assesses income and property eligibility.']

What help is available

A home assessment identifies appropriate measures, such as insulation, air sealing, ventilation and heating-efficiency work. The work varies by the home’s needs and funding.

Documents to prepare

Ask the local agency for its current checklist. Prepare income or HEAP eligibility records, utility information and ownership or landlord-contact details. Explain any structural, moisture or safety problem before an assessor visits.

How to get started

  1. Use the agency directory linked from MaineHousing’s weatherization page.
  2. Contact the local community action agency for an application and waiting-list information.
  3. Arrange the assessment and obtain owner consent if needed.

After applying

Ask for the approved scope and final-inspection information. Some hazards must be corrected before work can start; request the reason for a deferral and ask about another repair program. Do not order work independently expecting reimbursement.

Common questions

Do all homes get the same improvements?

No. The assessment determines suitable measures for the particular dwelling.

Must I already receive HEAP?

Not always. MaineHousing says some households qualify under weatherization income rules alone.

Can a landlord with a small apartment building ask about help?

Yes. Eligible two-to-four-unit residential buildings are included, subject to the program’s property requirements.

Can unsafe conditions delay the work?

Yes. Structural, electrical, heating or moisture problems can require correction first. Ask the agency what is needed.
