Work First Family Assistance (North Carolina TANF)

Work First is North Carolina’s TANF family-assistance program. It combines temporary support with employment services.

Who can apply

County DSS checks family and financial rules. The wider service income threshold is not necessarily the cash-benefit threshold.

What help is available

Qualifying families may receive cash, diversion, emergency or supportive services. Availability depends on the category.

Documents to prepare

  • Child and household information.
  • Income and resource records.
  • Requested residency and eligibility proof.

How to get started

  1. Apply

    Use ePASS or county DSS.

  2. Discuss options

Ask about Benefit Diversion or Emergency Assistance for short-term needs.

  3. Complete the plan

Follow the Mutual Responsibility Agreement and relevant work requirements.

After applying

Ask about time limits and exemptions; report changes and retain notices.
